Entering its 50th year of operation, the Rochester & Genesee Valley Railroad Museum (RGVRRM) is announcing its 2022 schedule full of fun special events for adults, families, and children alike at their rural museum grounds off Route 251 in Rush. Running at full capacity for the first time since 2019, tickets for upcoming events are on sale now.

“As the largest operating railroad museum in New York State, we’re always looking for fun new ways to showcase the history of our local railroads,” said Museum President Otto Vondrak. “Many people take their first train ride ever here, which means a lot to our volunteers.” RGVRRM is the only railroad museum in New York State with its own demonstration railroad to provide train rides to the public. All tickets include train rides and admission to the museum grounds for self-guided tours.

This year’s schedule brings back many popular past events, as well as new ones. Bring the family along for festive seasonal favorites, including Easter Bunny Train Rides in April, a Father’s Day BBQ with live music in June, and Pumpkin Patch Train Rides in October. Beer, wine, and hard cider enthusiasts will enjoy the museum’s Rails & Ales and Wine & Cider Tasting events in May and September (21 and over only). On three summer evenings in June, July, and August, RGVRRM teams up with neighboring New York Museum of Transportation to offer Trains & Trolleys at Twilight for an old-fashioned ride to an ice cream social at the Trolley Park. Princesses and superheroes return to the rails in July, and Classic Cars round out the offerings in September.

Possibly one of the most exciting events is planned for the end of summer when New York State’s only operating steam locomotive returns this August to pull two weekends of train rides at RGVRRM.

“Everyone is excited to bring back all the exciting sights and sounds of steam railroading this summer,” said Vondrak. “Since they were replaced by diesels nearly 70 years ago, there’s few opportunities to ride behind a real living, breathing steam locomotive.” A non-profit tracing its roots back to 1937, the volunteers have been working hard behind the scenes through the off-season to prepare the museum for these exciting special events. “We depend on the support of the public to preseve,” Vondrak said, “and we’re looking forward to welcoming everyone aboard our trains as we operate at full capacity once again.
