From the start, buildings have played a critical
role in the development of railroads. From rural depots like
our Industry depot to magnificent stations like Grand Central
Station, many buildings served both the railroad and the
general public. Other structures such as towers, crossing
shanties, tool houses, and freight houses served in many
different roles for the railroads and their employees.
The museum is working on preserving several
different types of buildings and structures. These include
the cornerstone of our museum, the Erie Railroad's Industry,
New York station, a New York Central crossing shanty, and
a Rochester, Lockport and Buffalo Railway waiting room.
The museum has another important
building, one which did not serve any other railroad but
our own, but one which we hope will provide us a capability
to allow us to preserve our historic structures, our railroad
equipment and more: our Restoration Building. Built
new by the museum, we continue to outfit this building to
help support our maintenance and restoration efforts.
We invite you to come on
in and learn more
about our various buildings and see what is going on with
each of them.
